Why one team for waterproofing and tiling?

Tiles do not stop water; the waterproofing layer under them does. When one team tiles and another waterproofs, a leak months later turns into blame, and the fix is breaking the new tiles.

When we do both, we run a flood test before tiling: we block the drain, fill the floor with water and check the floor below. Tiling starts only after the test passes.

How we work

1. Inspection and measuring: we check the floor, walls and plumbing and agree what the bathroom needs.
2. Surface preparation: old tiles removed where needed, and the surface cleaned down to a sound base.
3. Waterproofing: corners, pipes and the drain treated first, then the layers taken up the walls, highest in the shower area.
4. Flood test before a single tile goes down.
5. Tiling: floor sloped to the drain, tiles laid and grouted, and silicone at corners and around fixtures.

How to tell good tiling

• Water runs to the drain and never stands in a spot.
• No hollow sound when you tap a tile.
• Even, filled joints, and no tile edge sitting higher than its neighbour.
• Non-slip floor tiles, because a bathroom floor is always wet.
• Silicone at the corners and around the shower and basin.

Before you buy tiles

Work out the tiles and boxes from your bathroom size with the bathroom tile calculator. Buy one extra box for breakage, and buy every box from the same batch number, because colour varies slightly between batches.

What decides the cost?

• New or existing: an existing bathroom needs the old tiles removed first.
• Area: the floor alone, or the walls too, and to what height.
• Tile size: large tiles need a flatter floor.
• Waterproofing and plumbing condition: any existing leak is fixed before tiling.
