Where does a kitchen need waterproofing before tiling?
A kitchen is not a bathroom, but some spots get water every day. We waterproof them before tiling, because fixing them later means breaking tiles:
- Under and around the sink: the most common source of kitchen leaks.
- The washing machine or dishwasher spot, if it is in the kitchen.
- A floor with a drain, or one that is washed with water.
- A kitchen above a room: any leak shows on the ceiling below.
How we work
- Inspection and measuring: floor and wall areas, and where the water and power points are.
- Surface preparation: old tiles removed where needed, and the floor levelled.
- Waterproofing the wet spots listed above.
- Tiling: the floor, then the wall behind the worktop, grouted, with the edges sealed with silicone.
Tips before you choose tiles
- Floor: choose non-slip tiles, because a kitchen floor gets water and oil.
- Worktop wall: choose easy-clean tiles with narrow joints, because grease collects in the joints.
- Grout colour: a dark grout hides dirt better than white.
- Quantity: buy one extra box for breakage, and every box from the same batch number.
What decides the cost?
- New or existing: an existing kitchen needs the old tiles removed, and sometimes cabinets taken off.
- Area: the floor alone, or the walls too.
- Tile size: large tiles need a flatter floor.
- Wet spots: how many, and whether any is already leaking.

Does a kitchen need waterproofing before tiling?
Yes, at the wet spots: under the sink, the washing machine spot, and any floor with a drain. Water that gets under unprotected tiles reaches the walls and the floor below.
Do you tile the floor and walls together?
Yes. We tile the kitchen floor and the wall behind the worktop, and agree the area with you at the inspection.
Do you give a price before the inspection?
We do not give a final figure before seeing the kitchen, because the price depends on the area and its condition. Send a photo on WhatsApp and we will arrange a visit.
